Holga cameras are often modified:

* A Holga's interior can be "flocked" — coated with matte black paint — in order to limit the effect of light bouncing off the plastic interior from light leaks.
* The Holga's aperture switch can be modified to set a large ('cloudy') and small ('sunny') aperture.[8]
* The lens, and sometimes the entire shutter assembly, can be replaced with a pinhole (the "Pinholga").
* The plastic lens can be replaced with a glass version (the "Woca").
* Newer models of the camera come with multiple optional frame inserts (4.5 × 6 cm and 6 × 6 cm). Shooting without an insert can lead to problems keeping the 120 size film flat against the film plane.

Some modifications permit the use of other film formats:

* Holga cameras may be fitted with a Polaroid back, allowing use of Polaroid 80 series instant film, or with newer models, 100 series film (but the image is not centered). This modification, sometimes termed a "Holgaroid" or "Polga", renders the viewfinder unusable, but allows for instant Holga prints.
* By sandwiching a normal 35mm roll of film into the Holga's 120 spool, "sprocket hole" exposures may be taken that expose the entire surface of 135 film.
* Cameras such as the Hasselblad have been modified to make use of a Holga lens.
* Holga plastic lenses have been adapted to the Nikon f-mount. An f-mount, 'melted' plastic Holga lens has been used on a digital f-mount camera.

The Holga is an inexpensive, medium format 120 film toy camera, originating in China, that later came to be appreciated for its low-fidelity aesthetic.

The Holga's cheap construction and simple meniscus lens often yields pictures that display vignetting, blur, light leaks, and other distortions. Ironically, the camera's quality problems became a virtue among some photographers, with Holga photos winning awards and competitions in art and news photography.

Diana cameras are predisposed to light leaks, a situation often remedied by sealing the seams with light-proof tape (like black electrical tape) after loading the film. To get the completed roll out of the camera, it is necessary to untape the body -- a ponderous but very useful procedure, as it helps to prevent a lot of unpredictable orange light streaks on the negatives/prints. The design of the Diana incorporates a lens that produces an image circle which only marginally covers the diagonal of a film frame. This marginal coverage field produces images with often pronounced vignetting. The poor quality of the plastic meniscus lens results in generally low contrast, odd color rendition, chromatic aberration, and blurred images. Although these attributes are generally thought undesirable in a camera, some photographers have intentionally utilized these characteristics to produce photographs with interesting or artistic effects.

Though made by a different manufacturer, the Holga camera is considered by many to be the modern-day successor to the Diana. As of 2007, Lomography, the current distributor of Holga cameras, has launched a revitalization of the Diana, issuing a replica called the Diana+ with a few minor added features.

New Features for the Fisheye No. 2

“B” (Bulb) setting
In response to heavy demand from the Lomographic Community at large, the Fisheye 2 has a slamming long-exposure setting. By holding down the shutter button with your finger, you can keep the shutter open for as long as you like – thereby inviting all the gorgeous ambient light outside to come on in. To close the shutter, merely release the button. When using 400ISO film, keeping the shutter open for about 1-3 seconds is usually enough for a nightime city shot. Extend that to 5 seconds or so for a streaky overexposure. If it's really dark out, then let the shutter go for 10-20 seconds. For the sharpest images, place your camera onto something sturdy. Given the Fisheye 2's super-wide-angle view, handheld shots can be pretty sharp too – as long as you hold still. For buckwild abstracts – move you camera around with the shutter open – or even twist it in a circle!

“LNB” variable exposure switch
Use this to control your Fisheye 2's shutter timing. “L” locks the shutter so it can't accidentally fire. “N” shoots a normal, instant exposure (1/100 sec, f/8). “B” or “bulb” selects Fisheye 2's long exposure capabilities – as detailed above.

Standard Flash Hotshoe & Built-In Electronic Flash
Use this to sync a Lomographic Colorsplash Flash or any other manual hotshoe flash to your Fisheye 2. The flash will fire when you hit the shutter release. You can also use the internal (built-in) flash as well.

First and Second-Curtain Flash
When using the “N” setting, both the internal and hotshoe flash will fire when you hit the shutter button (first curtain). If you select “B,” then the hotshoe flash will fire when you first depress the button (first curtain), and the internal flash will fire when you let go of the button (second curtain).

Multiple Exposure Switch (MX)
This allows you to take two or more shots on the same frame. Take your first shot, press the MX button, and you're now ready for the next one. Repeat as many times as you like.

Accessory Viewfinder
Do you see what I see? If your camera suddenly comes alive, looks you in the eye, and asks you this question – then you can calmly reply, “I sure do.” Just slip this little jewel into the hotshoe and you'll get an authentic preview of the fisheye treat waiting for you to capture it.
